Wooohooo XC Schooling.....

22/3/2015

With the weather starting to brighten up, the days getting longer and our first event entry done it was time to go XC schooling.....YIPEEEE!!! After what feels like a very long time, since August last year, Milli and myself were both pleased to be back out in the open and see the XC fences! There are some fantastic fences at Bonfleur, with plenty of tricky combinations and a superb water complex with a variety of jumps around and into the water along with a variety of steps in and out.....definitely worth a visit! Check out their website by clicking on the following link: www.bonfleurcrosscountrycourse.co.uk.
PictureMilli jumping the 'scary' ditch!
I was very much looking forward to doing some XC with Milli as after her break at the end of the season last year she seems to have come back a better horse! A much more forward thinking and focused horse but her cheekiness to still evidently there as she showed at Bonfleur! Towards the end, when you would think she was a little tired, on landing from a roll top fence, downhill, the breaks went on IMMEDIATELY, very nearly depositing me over her head into the ditch with water running through it in front of us! This was clearly a 'horse-drowning' ditch as far as Milli was concerned but I managed to slide / push and pull my way back up her neck, back into the saddle, sorted my reins out gave her a kick and over we went! I think the sight and sound of the running water just caught her off guard and she thought best stop immediately and access the situation, just like her mum would have done! I was adamant that I wasn't coming off.....I had my air jacket on! At first I tried to un-clip it and then was just going to dis-mount gracefully off the side but when I realised that wasn't an option I, with the help of Milli putting her head up, was determined to NOT fall off....we've all been there haven't we?!?!  Before this Milli was on top form and jumped brilliantly, including bounce steps into the water and jump / drops into the water along with some of the fantastic combination fences there!

We were joined by Madeleine Tomlin on her event pony Vinny as they were getting some XC practice in before their first competitions. Madeleine has only had Vinny for a couple of months so this will be their first season eventing together and hopefully we will be travelling to some events together so keep checking back here to follow their progress!!
